Week of December 7th-December 18th, 2009

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow on Wednesday! The following is a glimpse of what we have been working on this week in first grade!

In math this week students worked on counting pennies, nickels and dimes. We have also been talking a lot about patterns and continue to practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

We read Sylvia’s Shoes as part of the Text Talk program this week and introduced the words certainly, perhaps, resourceful, smooth, collected and patience. These words are not for students to memorize or master, but to aid to their listening comprehension and increase their oral vocabulary.

Students also continue to work on handwriting and writing letters with question words. Friday students wrote letters to our Top Dog, who is Riley this week.

On Thursday we walked to the Colonel Paul Wentworth House. We were able to tour the house and learn about some of the ways people lived in the 1700’s. Students enjoyed complimentary cookies and cider at the end of tour. Thank you to those of you who sent in a small donation for this trip.

Friday was the geography bee, where we cheered on the fourth through sixth graders. We also had reading buddies on Friday with Mrs. Krauss’ class.

On Monday the 14th we took our monthly trip to the public library where students listened to a story about the holidays and checked out books.

Coming Up:
*RGS Roller Skating party on Wednesday at Roller Skate Newington
*Making Gingerbread Houses
*Winter Break

Have a great weekend and keep on reading!

DECEMBER

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break! We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday! We have another big month ahead of us here in first grade. This Thursday, December 3rd, we will be going to the PORTSMOUTH MUSIC HALL for a performance of the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon.

This month Rollinsford Grade School we will be focusing on the character trait of RESPONSIBILITY. RGS staff will be looking for students who are showing responsibility and students will be earning tickets. Once a week a few tickets will be drawn and those chosen will have the privilege of eating lunch on the stage! Be sure to look for the star of names in our hallways.

Wednesday, December 23rd will be our annual ROLLER SKATING PARTY at Roller Skate Newington. Permission slips will be sent out when the date gets closer. During this trip all RGS staff and students travel to Roller Skate Newington for an afternoon of Rollerskating before Winter Break.

FIRST TRIMESTER IN REVIEW

NOVEMBER

November was a very busy month at Rollinsford Grade School! We want to thank all parents for coming to PARENT-TEACHER-CONFERENCES. It is great to hear that so many families are reading at home and practicing sight words! We will continue to send home weekly reading logs, sight words and vocabulary words for families to reinforce at home.

The last week in November we had a special performer, JOHNNY the K, come to our school for a musical performance. The performance was centered on the character trait of RESPONSIBILITY and was very interactive and motivating for students. We will be discussing responsibility school wide throughout the month of December.

In Science this month we have extended our unit on the SUN, MOON AND EARTH by taking a closer look at rocks. Students have been observing different rocks and reading about the layers of the earth.

This month we have also started a whole class read-aloud called MISS PIGGLE WIGGLE by Betty Macdonald. Miss Piggle Wiggle is a fun adult who solves the problems of children, parents and animals alike. Children especially love Miss Piggle Wiggle, who lives in an upside-down house.

November was also home to the tri-annual RGS AWARDS CEREMONY. Each student received an award for their progress and contributions to our classroom community throughout the first trimester.
In math we have been working on counting and exchanging pennies and nickels, as well as skip counting by 2’s and 5’s. Students are learning to use number lines and number grids in order to work with numbers.

OCTOBER
In October we finished our unity on community and began learning about the Sun, the Moon and the Earth as part of our Science curriculum. Students have been reading books, observing the moon and asking questions about space. At the end of October our class, along with Mrs. Nichols and Mrs. Schneph, went to the Christa McAuliffe PLANETARIUM.

Students also completed a unit with our guidance counselor Mrs. Person about BODY SAFETY this month. Mrs. Person came into our classroom to teach students about their bodies, including good touches and hurtful touches.

Mr. Spinney came into our classroom to talk about FIRE SAFETY this month. Students talked about what to do in case of a fire and had the opportunity to explore and sit in one of the fire trucks. Thank you Mr. Spinney and the Rollinsford Fire Department!

We began our TEXT TALK reading comprehension and vocabulary program this month. Text Talk is a program published by Scholastic where students are introduced to a picture book every week. As the books are read, students answer comprehension questions. Vocabulary words are also introduced to help support student reading comprehension

SEPTEMBER
Our first month of school was all about learning expectations, practicing routines and building community. Students adjusted well to the full-day program and began working on the DAILY 5 right away, learning how to read books by reading the pictures, reading the words or retelling a story and began our Everyday Math unit by strengthening number concepts practicing number formation and recognition.

While we worked on building community in our classroom, students were learning about economics through a unit called KID TOWN. In Kid Town our students made and ran their own town, which they named Pizza Town. Students named their stores, made products and shopped/worked at the stores learning how to handle pennies as well as customers and students quickly came to realize the importance of working and earning money as they ran out of money.

As we all know, September is a big month for harvesting apples. Grammy Ross came into our classroom for two days this month and made delicious APPLESAUCE with our class. Thank you Grammy Ross!

Our BUDDY READERS began in September. Each first grade student has been paired with a student in Mrs. Krauss’s third/fourth grade class. Every Friday students get together to read and share books they enjoy.

On the second Monday of every month we will be walking to the ROLLINSFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY. Students will have the opportunity to listen to a story and check out books during this trip. Parent volunteers are welcome to join us on our walk!

Welcome to First Grade!

Filed under: Uncategorized — rgsspear at 3:41 pm on Friday, August 28, 2009

Welcome to first grade!  I am so pleased that you will be in my class!  First grade is an exciting year full of learning.  Learning about the USA, having a chance to be Top Dog, reading great stories, studying about the Sun/Moon/Earth, Writer’s Workshop, fun math games, singing songs and reading poems, and first grade pen pals are just a few of the many activities to look forward to this year!  I can’t wait to meet you!  I have been busy setting up our classroom but there are many parts that we are going to create together once you come to school.

I’d like to tell you a little about me.  I live in Dover with my husband and my twin eight year old daughters, Jane and Kate.  My daughters are going into third grade.  When they were in first grade they were nervous at first but absolutely loved it!  I have two Golden Retrievers named Tucker and Curry and a cat named Pepper.  Last year was my first year at RGS but before that I taught at Mast Way Elementary School in Lee, Horne Street School in Dover, and I taught at Barrington Elementary School for 11 years before my daughters were born.  When I was in elementary school, my favorite subject was math and it’s still my favorite subject to teach.  In my free time I love to read, knit, swim, and work in my garden.

This year we are lucky because you will have two teachers in our classroom.  Ms. Gagne will join us as an intern from UNH.  Years ago she was a student in my third and fourth grade class!!  Mrs. Hess will also be in our classroom as a full time coach.

We are very interested in learning more about you.  We can’t wait to know your favorite color, your favorite animal, if you have any pets, what you want to learn this year, what kind of books you like, what you like to do when you have free time and anything else you can tell us.  We would like for you to draw us a picture that tells us something about you (for example your family, pets, hobbies, etc.) or something fun you did this summer and bring it the first day of school.  We also would like you to bring on the first day of school your favorite book that you love reading/listening to.  This will help us to get to know each other.

Remember this year you will be having a morning snack and lunch at school.  I am stressing healthy snacks like fruit, granola bars, regular popcorn, etc.  Please no sweets in the morning!

We look forward to spending the year with you!

Ms. Spear, Ms. Gagne and Mrs. Hess
